Fellowship Bible Church School - "The Scrap Yard School"

LOCATION:

Cape Town, South Africa

SCHOOL INFORMATION:

The Fellowship Bible Church School - "The Scrap Yard School" is located in an extremely poor area of Cape Town, South Africa. The school is run out of an old abandoned auto scrap yard which some church members have tried to clean up. The property contains a large tin roof structure, under which some temporary walls have been erected to house a worship enclosure, some offices and school classrooms. The students at the school are children of workers on farms across the street. These labourers are paid partly with cheap wine and many are addicted to alcohol. Their children roam the streets and are not included in the local public schools because of over-crowding and behavioural problems. Workers with the Children at Risk program have seen the need to educate these children trapped in a circle of life-long poverty and hopelessness. The Fellowship Bible Church started the school a year ago in an attempt to improve the lives of the children and to give them a hope for the future. In addition to providing a Christian education, the school provides a meal each school day from food donated by local businesses.

CURRENT SITUATION:

The school runs on a very slim budget from donated funds. Students are not able to pay school fees. Their few teaching resources have been donated by some local schools. Staff are all volunteers and attempts are made from time to time to pay them an honorarium when money is available. Most of the students have learning problems and need special help academically and emotionally. Unless more help and support is forthcoming the near future the school may have to close its doors.

C4A RESPONSE:

Through C4A Canadian donors have so far committed to provide some funding to maintain the school on a month to month basis for the remainder of this school year which ends in December 2009. More support and committment will be needed in the coming months and for the long-term survival of the school.
